About Kris Moran

I love decorating and design – one of the favorite perks of my job is seeing all of the wonderful homes and condos that we list and sell! I love to “borrow” inspiration from them, and from decorating shows, magazines and the many blogs I am addicted to!

Youth is Wasted on the Young

I was driving the kids to school the other day and the commencement speech titled “Wear Sunscreen” came on as a song.  Turns on that wasn’t really a commencement address – a woman named Mary Schmidt wrote it in 1997 (probably to her younger self) and it was published in the Chicago Tribune and then later set to music by Baz Luhrmann.  Each and every word is true – but I suppose when you are in your early 20′s, you don’t listen to it or pay any attention at all.  My carpool in the back seat said in unison  “ugh, what is this song?” and I’m in the front seat, glad I have my sunglasses on because it made me a little teary.  Here is the YouTube video – I hope you enjoy it as much as I did or can use it at an upcoming graduation celebration:

Here’s the full speech in the Chicago Tribue.

A few of my favorite lines:

“The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.”

“Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.”

“Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.”

“Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they’ve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.”

“Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.”

Design Crush

I stumpled upon the blog of a husband/wife home building/design team in Calgary.  I’m drooling over all of their portfolio images, especially the kitchens and bathrooms.  Probably because I’m dying to gut my own kitchen and my master bathroom is a brass/cultured marble nod to the past.  And not brass in a cool way, like the new brass fixtures I’ve been seeing in magazines and showrooms.  I have big plans in my head for my kitchen – and it involves a complete re-design with a big, long island where all 4 of us can saddle up.  Check out some of the images I’ve been inspired by from the Veranda Interiors blog…

I die for this backsplash…

These wood floors are killer…

Love the lighting, tile and the open shelves…

I would even enjoy laundry in a space like this…

These doors!

I love the all white space, kicked up a notch with the black and pink accents…

This all white bathroom has just a small accent of blue tile….

Another all white bathroom, with some splashes of orange…

Happy Monday!

Middle School

Ok, so there is a reason people write books about it and make movies about Middle School.  It kind of sends chills up your spine.  I went to Daughter’s 6th grade orientation last week and the Social Studies teacher said it best “Kids, this is going to be the weirdest time in your life so you might as well make the best of it!”   Daughter is already at our Middle School for 5th grade – but it is a separate program and kids had the option of staying at the elementary school.  They are kept totally separate from the other kids so its not the “true” middle school environment.  But she is starting to talk about things like “the popular girls” and she is much more conscious about her hair and clothes, owning as much Vera Bradley as humanly possible, covering up her zits and thinking she is ugly and worried about all those things that self-conscious, pre-pubescent kids must worry about.  All I can say is UGH.

I have friends whose kids are the popular kids.  I have friends who have kids who are extremely smart and sometimes struggle socially.  I have friends whose kids struggle academically.  I have a friend who has the most amazing daughter, yet she doesn’t have a single friend in Middle School.  Not one.  Perplexing and heart hurting.  My friend actually had to collect her child early from school on Valentines Day because she knew she would not be receiving any Valentines at the class party - because in Middle School there was no requirement to bring one for the entire class.  Perplexing and heart hurting.  If you collect all these moms together, no one has it easy.  Our kids are all unique and have struggles, big and small.  And lots of heart hurting moments for us mothers.  I did not read about this in “What to Expect”!  Who knew we might long for the “easy” days of sleep deprivation and diapers?

You love your own child to pieces.  When they are sad, you are sad.  When they are hurt, you are hurt.   All the things I wish I could tell Daughter and teach her as she approaches the weird days of Middle School - and that she’d believe me, or take my advice, or feel the way I want her to.  But of course, she is a kid and has to make her own way in this world and figure this stuff out on her own.  If only our children could see themselves as we see them.  If they could see themselves as beautiful even if they have a zit on their forehead.  If they could be popular for being kind, not just for being a cheerleader or for wearing Hollister.  If only every kid at school knew our child’s heart and knew how much they are loved, so that they would never, ever want to hurt them.  If only, if only, if only.    BUT, if I could, these are some things I would want Daughter to know…

Breakfast

I promised you the recipe for one of my New Years Eve brunch dishes.  Introducing…Overnight Blueberry Cream Cheese French Toast Casserole!  Its delicious, you make it the night before, it makes great leftovers – and will leave your guests raving!

Overnight Blueberry Cream Cheese French Toast Casserole

12 slices french bread, cut up into 1 inch cubes (you can also use Texas Toast or sourdough – a thick bread so it doesn’t get mushy)

1 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened

1 C fresh blueberries

3 T powdered sugar

10 – 12 eggs, beaten (use 12 for a less dense casserole, more like bread pudding)

2 cups milk

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/3 C maple syrup

Blueberry Syrup Topping (this makes the dish, don’t skip it!)

1 C sugar

2 T cornstarch

1 C water

1 1/2 C fresh blueberries

Directons:

1.  Prepare a 9×13 baking dish.  Arrange half the bread squares evenly on the bottom of the pan.  Top with the blueberries.  Beat the cream cheese and the powdered sugar and drop on top of the bread and blueberries with a spoon.  Cover with the rest of the bread cubes.

2.  In a large bowl, mix the eggs, milk, vanilla and syrup.  Pour evenly over the casserole.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.

3.  Remove the casserole from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.  Bake covered for the first 30 minutes at 350.  Uncover and bake another 25 minutes, or until lightly golden brown on the top.

4.  While baking, make the syrup.  Mix the sugar, corn syrup and water and bring to a boil.  Stir constantly 3 minutes.  Add the remaining blueberries and reduce heat until your mixture is simmering and simmer for 10 minutes.  Serve on the side of your casserole while still warm.

(Recipe adapted from All Recipes)

**Now if you really want to enjoy this dish, you can also add a dollop of fresh whipped cream, or serve with heavy cream – seriously delicious this way!

If you are the type of person who is resistant to entertain, a brunch is a great way to entertain with less stress.  You can prepare this the night before, and serve with some heat and serve breakfast meat, orange juice and fresh fruit.  I also found the cutest way to serve eggs via Pinterest – slice up some red, yellow or orange bell pepper thickly.  Place those in a heated, buttered frying pan and crack an egg inside the pepper – such a beautiful presentation!

Enjoy!

Coastal Colors

I’ve mentioned the home I’ve been working on briefly in the past – a renovation to make a home handicap accessible.  Last week I had to choose all the paint colors, kitchen granite and bathroom granite from remnants.  Talk about stressful – what if I made a choice he didn’t like?  What if it looked terrible on the walls?  The only direction he gave me was “coastal colors”.  I did get a little help from a “real” decorator, but in the end its my tush on the line!  On Friday, the painters started.  I was out of town and got a freak-out phone call that the ceilings were painted tan and the rooms were the wrong color and everything looked dark.

I should know better than to freak out – when paint is going over white primer, it will look dark at first.  And colors look shocking in a room with no furniture.  And change itself is always shocking – we were used to looking at the white primed drywall.  I went over on Saturday and was so relieved.  It looked absolutely fantastic.  I’m in love, love, love with the colors.

First up is our main color throughout the house – Manchester Tan (all colors are Benjamin Moore).  This is a lovely neutral and is quite light.  It blends nicely with the wood cabinetry.

Next is the Master Suite – painted my all time favorite, Palladian Blue:

And then a punch of fun in the office and laundry area that adjoin the kitchen.  You can see these rooms from all the main living areas, so I left it Manchester Tan, but then added a 50% blend of Palladian Blue to the ceilings.  In the South, we love our blue ceilings and in these rooms, it looks fantastic!  You can easily mix your paint colors at different percentages to get the exact color you are looking for.  By mixing it at 50%, the ceiling wasn’t too dark, yet it still blends and makes sense with the color story of the rest of the house. (Be careful mixing your tans…)

The kids room is painted a lovely pale, cool blue called “In Your Eyes” – it will look fantastic with the yellow/gray/blue chevron bedding I picked out.   A boy and a girl will be sharing this room so it is not too feminine, not too masculine.  The guest bathroom is this color and the adjoining guest suite is painted Machester Tan, with In Your Eyes in the bathroom.

Lastly, the trim and doors are White Dove.  In a “happy acccident”, the ceilings were also painted this color and they look fantastic.  Not that bright ceiling white you usually see.  I had actually selected “Dover White”, my all-time favorite white trim color by Sherwin Williams, but that got lost in translation.  Oh well, this color is equally neutral and a good white – not too yellow, blue or gray.

The painter gave me an excellent painting tip .  He said if you use a cheap paint, you will always see the difference in the line you cut in at the ceiling and around the trim.  If you use a high quality paint, you will not see that line.  So true.  I always, always use a paint with a built-in primer.  It makes painting so much easier, no lines show and the quality is evident.

For the kitchen I chose Colonial Gold granite – it was the lightest of the choices in the price range.  Actually this was one level higher in price, but they had received 4 extra slabs and said they’d discount it – lucky us!   I wish quartz had been in the price range, but I think this will look great with the wood cabinetry.  For the bathrooms I lucked out with creamy white quartz remnants.  This project is on a tight budget and thanks to donations and discounts from local businesses, we are able to have some high end finishes.

Everyone keeps asking me when “my” House Hunters episode is going to air – I still don’t know!  Last I heard it was being reviewed by executives and then it will get placed on the schedule – stay tuned.  However, there is another Destin episode airing tomorrow night – January 22 at 9pm – be sure to watch it or set your DVR and check it out.  The buyer is actually the owner of a local Aveda salon who moved from a house just down the street from me, and they filmed last July – I know it will be a really good episode!

A Good Book

Sorry for the longer than intended blogging break – of course no Christmas is complete without getting totally sick afterwards.  Today is my first day back up and around.  I’m convinced I got sick from the sick pharmacist who gave me my flu shot, but that’s another story…

Since its dark and cold pretty much everywhere, I figured everyone might like to cuddle up with a good book.  I read all the time so I thought I’d share my favorite books from 2012:

The Prophet” by Michael Koryta (sliding doors)

”The Big Exit” by David Carnoy (suspenseful)

The Murderer’s Daughters” by Randy Susan Meyers (really good)

”Defending Jacob” by William Landay (you did not see this coming!)

”Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn (Sister told me about this one before everyone else knew about it!)

”Where we Belong” by Emily Griffin (more of a beach read, but a good book!)

”Gold” by Chris Cleave (its hard to believe the author is a male!)

Incendiary” by Chris Cleave - have a tissue handy, (and by all means read “Little Bee” by the same author if you missed that!)

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and have started off the new year slightly less sick than I!  I cooked for over 20 people on Christmas Eve and have some wonderful recipes to share.  I also had a New Years Eve brunch and will have to share the blueberry cream cheese french toast casserole recipe – totally yummy!  We had a great Christmas with family and friends -it flew by so fast in a whirlwind of shopping, cooking, parties and of course the Christmas Miracle Project!  I will leave you with a picture I took of the kids with Santa -with some photoshopped snow!

XO,

Kris
